Sintra is like a fairy tale palace that sits in the clouds, on top of a mountain. It's romanticism finds its roots in its origin as indeed it was built by King Ferdinand II for his beloved wife Queen Maria II of Portugal. The opulent and colourful architecture is utterly charming and I have trod the path, through the forested hills and up to the Palacio da Pena and through the gilt and mirrored rooms of this unique summer palace. I've also climbed the walls of the Castelo dos Mouros, all on one hot summer day! The views are breathtaking and how they built castles and palaces so high in the sky
