As I grew up in the East Midlands, I was always aware of the presence of Rutland , which is Britain’s smallest county but is packed full of interesting things to do and see. Rutland Water is known throughout the country amongst water sport enthusiasts and nature lovers. I didn’t realise that a historic house, Hambleton Hall sat at the centre of the man-made lake until I drew it. I love the golden sandstone of many of the historic buildings in Oakham including Tolethorpe Hall, Lyddington Beck House and Oakham Castle, home to hundreds of antique horseshoes!
