I was commissioned to draw Illinois by one of my licensees, as part of a series of notebooks celebrating America. I loved discovering this Mid-West American state, which is home to Chicago as well as Frank Lloyd Wright and Abe Lincoln. It is also the origin of the production line as epitomised by the motor car plant, which I have included in the top left of the State scape. The repetition in the car plant appears again, in the fields of corn, the mounds of coal and as such this design is very much about the imprint of mankind on the natural landscape.
