I was commissioned to draw Illinois by one of my licensees, as part of a series of notebooks celebrating America. I loved discovering this Mid-West American state, which is home to Chicago as well as Frank Lloyd Wright and Abe Lincoln. It is also the origin of the production line as epitomised by the motor car plant, which I have included in the top left of the State scape. The repetition in the car plant appears again, in the fields of corn, the mounds of coal and as such this design is very much about the imprint of mankind on the natural landscape. We keep this separate from the company badge because a registered office can be an accountant's spare room, and a company can be registered in Britain while everything it does happens somewhere else. Where we have not looked, we say so rather than assuming.

This is about the individual product, not the company. A British firm can sell things made abroad, which is normal and not a criticism. We would rather tell you which is which than average them into a score.
