Koln, or Cologne as we non Germans know it, is a vast, industrial city by the River Rhine. Not only does it stretch over a wide area but it also spans 2,000 years and combines decorative Gothic architecture, as seen in the pretty cathedral and old town, with modernist structures such as the Kranhauser on the banks of the river. It's a party town too with much klinking of glasses of the local brew and every year people have fun at the Karneval, getting dressed up in very strange, medieval inspired costume and parading through the city.
