When I was a student I hitch-hiked to Bretagne aka Brittany, with my friend Sophie. It turned out not to be a good idea and we had to jump out of a moving car when the man who was driving it started throwing money at us as he left the road and hurtled down a remote country track. Bretagne is so close to where I live now, just across the sea from Devon and on a clear day I strain my eyes in vain so as to catch a glimpse of this beautiful and mysterious land.
