John Charles Cording opened his first shop in 1839 at 231 The Strand, right next to the historic Temple Bar. [The company made] practical clothing for the British outdoors [and adopted Charles Mackintosh's waterproof fabric in 1843, later making] outfits suited not only for riding and everyday use but also for the emerging motor car era. [In 1903] the current building, including its shopfront, was designed by Harold Arthur Woodington and constructed using Portland stone. In 2003, Cordings' management team approached their best customer with a proposal for a management buyout.
