Alfred and Maurice Matlow launched Matlow Bros. Ltd making jelly sweets in a small factory in London. In 1940, battered by the London Blitz during the Second World War, both companies decided to relocate to the current premises in New Mills. They moved into a former textile mill where wicks for miners' lamps were once made. The evacuation was originally intended as a temporary measure but became permanent. The mill, which is over 150 years old, was rebuilt after a fire in 1883 and is now a major landmark in New Mills, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Sett Valley. In 2022 an additional factory in Middlewich, Cheshire opened to make Squashies.
