If rust is allowed to persist, it will weaken metal surfaces. As the rust is brittle and unstable, it can’t be painted over and will cause painted surfaces to break down, with the paint starting to bubble or flake. To prevent the formation of rust, the metal surface needs to be protected from air and water.
