This is a finely carved Baoulé ceremony mask from Ivory Coast representing Queen Pokou. It has extremely finely carved hairstyle, tribal scarification marks, high eyebrow arches, a typical, small, straight Baule nose, and evocative painted eyes with black pupils. These is classic Baule style. Masks like this, called ‘Kpan’, belong to the family of the ‘Goli masks’. It is made of medium-weight wood decorated with rare yellow pigment colour which has great patina.
