John Fowler was born in Wiltshire in 1826 into a wealthy Quaker family. He was a talented agricultural engineer and inventor and is credited with being the inventor of the steam-driven plough engine, which 'mechanised' the agricultural industry in the 19 th century. In 1886, he formed a limited company John Fowler Co. Ltd and moved to Leeds, where he was at the forefront in the production of steam-powered agricultural engines and operating machinery. Oxford's Fowler plough is an example of such piece of operating machinery and appears in bright blue with red wheels and steel coloured furrowing
