5 YEARS IN THE MAKING Navy Strength gin is traditionally bottled at a minimum of 57% ABV. The term originates from the 18th-century British Royal Navy, where spirits were stored aboard ships alongside gunpowder. To verify the strength of the spirit, sailors mixed a small amount of gunpowder with the gin and attempted to ignite it. If the mixture burned, the spirit was considered strong enough - at least 57% ABV - and therefore “proved".
