Merton is of course, named after Merton Abbey which William Morris acquired in June 1881 for his workshops for his company Morris Co. The Abbey complex included buildings for textile printing and stained glass making plus fabric, tapestry and carpet weaving. The fact this beautiful design was named after such an important milestone in Morris’ life acquiring the mill and all he created from that, makes it a really important and well loved Morris design.
