This is the monstrose form of Euphorbia horrida , the African Milk Barrel . Where the normal plant makes a neat ribbed column, the monstrose version grows in an irregular, lumpy, almost sculptural way, with the ribs breaking up into bumps and offsets so no two plants look quite the same. The stems are blue-green, ridged and edged with short spines, and it clusters over time into a chunky group. Origins The species comes from the Great Karoo of South Africa, ranging through the Eastern Cape and into the Western Cape, where it grows in dry, rocky, semi-arid country in full exposure.
