During World War I, the War Department put out a tender for military supply railways. The Motor Rail Tramcar company won an order for several hundred of its 'Simplex' tractors. These machines where used on the War Department Light Railways, in close proximity to the front lines (where steam power would be more easily spotted by the enemy). After the war, many of these machines saw continued use in industry, particular where very light rail was used. The first train of the Ffestiniog Railway preservation era was hauled by such a machinie, and several have survived into preservation. This model
