2009 marked the beginning of a very new Formula One, with a raft of new technical rules having been introduced. Piloted by Heikki Kovalainen and Lewis Hamilton, the McLaren now featured heavily revised bodywork, very different-looking rear and front wings and a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS). 2009 also saw the much-lauded return of slick tyres. During a three-week gap between the German and Hungarian rounds, the MP4-24s were upgraded to a new specification.
